I strongly oppose the construction of a coal export terminal in Longview, Washington, which would transport dirty coal on trains and ships through the Northwest and send coal to Asia.
Coal export would harm my community by increasing congestion and noise with more coal train traffic, polluting our air and local waterways, harming existing businesses, and delaying emergency responders.
It would also make coal cost more here in America, by depleting our domestic supply. Why should we pay more so that rich fat cats in Australia, as well as in the USA, can get richer? Why should we pay more so that our own air can be even more polluted because of the burning of millions of tons of our own coal would be taking place in China, with far less environmental concern? Not a good idea for us!
Why is coal export a bad idea? Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel, by far. Across the country, Americans are turning to cleaner energy and phasing out coal power. Because of that, the coal industry has come up with a new plan: strip-mine coal in Montana and Wyoming, transport it on long coal trains through Northwest cities and towns, ship it on massive cargo ships off the West Coast, and sell it to overseas. Even the transport of this massive amount of dirty material would be very injurious to our worldwide environment, as well as extremely wasteful of rapidly dwindling oil and fuel reserves. From this perspective, the amount of carbon emissions created by transporting and burning that coal would exceed the carbon emissions of all other activities in Washington State combined.
It would also damage aquatic ecosystems and fishing areas on the Columbia River, increase tanker traffic and the potential for shipping accidents and spills, expand strip-mining in Wyoming and Montana, and escalate climate change.
I urge you to consider these impacts in the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement. In addition, the coal train traffic impacts in Longview are so great that Millennium cannot operate without massive, tax-payer-funded rail infrastructure changes currently planned as the SR 432 Project. The SR 432 Project must be analyzed in the Millennium EIS.
The maximum amount of coal proposed for export, 48 million tons, is a fraction of the amount consumed in Asia.
China alone burned about 3.5 billion tons in 2012, in just one year. This is nearly as much as the rest of the world combined. They do not need our coal to burn up as well; only the profits of a few multi- millionaires and their corporations are concerned.
From all perspectives, including economic, environmental, and public health, there are huge potentially disastrous impacts.
