I believe the Coal Port would be a disaster for Bellingham, Whatcom County, the Puget Sound, Washington, and our US economy and environment. It is a short sighted plan that profits only a few ultimately and harms many. Sure the initial building of the site would give our community jobs. However, it has been demonstrated that it would create a net loss of jobs due to the degradation of the businesses bordering the train tracks. Coal is an antiquated source of energy that is an environmental and health hazard from extraction to transport and in conversion to energy. We are are only hurting our future by shipping mass quantities across the ocean only to burn resources and then poison the air blowing back on us via wind and water currents. This project represents more than our community, it is a global example of poor longterm economic, public health, environment, and community planning. We should be spending our time and resources to create new business and energy sources which match healthy longterm goals for which our communities across the globe can truly sustain. I understand that many people in the world still depend on coal in many ways, but we should converting that dependence into more healthy ventures and retrain an redevelop our future. Please end this waste of time and resources poorly matched with the longterm needs of the community. Please cosider devoting time and resources to identifying those who are without jobs, skills, and resourecs available locally- and match business plans appropriately.
