Both from a scientific and a moral perspective, we cannot afford to export U.S. coal to Asia via coal export terminals based in Washington State. The super storm in the Philippines makes it clear that we can no longer afford to deny the reality of climate change. On our small planet, the daily decisions that we make add up to create the reality that we all live with.
The terminal will harm our communities: more coal trains will mean traffic congestion and pollution. Asthma and other lung diseases will increase.
Our planet is already stressed to the breaking point. Ice is melting worldwide and our climate is already destabilized. This week, the Seattle Times reported frightening news about the rapid rate of ocean acidification. The U.S. is facing drought and devastating forest fires.
Please think carefully about the science of climate change in making your decision. Think about the health of our local communities, and consider what the ethical choice is.
Think about what it will take to create a sustainable future for children and wildlife around the planet. Transporting and shipping coal to be burned in Asia will harm our health and will add to the growing problem of climate disruption.
