As a Washington State resident concerned that our environment will be strongly impacted by global warming, sea level rise, and ocean acidification, I request that the committee take the comments addressed to the coal industry by Christina Figueres, the United Nations climate chief, as if directed to them personally and officially as decision makers in the management of our Federal coal reserves. In short, Ms. Figueres says to keep the coal in the ground. We cannot afford to wait to deal with the global warming, sea level rise, and ocean acidification crises that diminish the opportunities for young people to live healthy and productive lives in a supportive environment. People who have enjoyed freely available clean water and food all their lives have no right to impose the disastrous hazards of global climate change on future generations of Americans and people around the world. The issues of global warming, sea level rise, and ocean acidification are on the table. You cannot deny that, even if you don't understand the science. As Ms. Figueres said, leave the coal in the ground.
