Submission Text
My name is Wendy E. Shepard. I have been a resident of San Juan County for 21 years and am a homeowner. My concern regarding the environmental impact of the proposed Millennium Bulk Terminals at Longview, Washington (coal export terminal) is considerable. Please study in depth how the coal dust would affect the crops on the farms en route from Montana to Longview (much of the food for the San Juan Islands comes from the Washington State farms) and study as well how the emissions en route from the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean would affect the shellfish and salmon which are the food for whales and human beings alike. Since whales and other sea creatures are a great attraction for tourists in the San Juan Islands, any damage to them would damage the economy of San Juan County. The effects of coal hazards in our air, drifting to the Western United States from China, needs to receive careful study as well. Coal is quickly becoming obsolete both here and in China because of the health hazards from its emissions. Common sense, and our moral responsibility for the planet and its living beings, suggest that we not senselessly poison our land, water, and air any further with this fuel. Thank you for listening.
