My name is Nicolette O’Connor. I am a homeowner (Vancouver, WA 98661) a recreational kayaker and hiker. Most importantly, I am a retired high school teacher who is passionately concerned about our children’s, children’s children’s quality of life.
We do not live in a vacuum. The decisions we make today--especially the Millennium Bulk Terminal's coal export project in Longview, WA--impact not only our quality of life, but the quality of life for future generations.
I respectfully request that the Washington Department of Ecology and other agencies to do a broad review of the impacts of exporting coal through the region and through Longview.
I request that the environmental review study the health impacts of the inhalation of coal dust. People all along the train route will inhale coal dust from the trains. Coal dust contains toxic metals and has respiratory health effects. A study needs to conducted that will extrapolate the increased health costs that will be incurred by the people and the communities at the extraction site and the terminal site as well as in all the communities the along the train routes.
Additionally, coal dust from coal trains and terminal operations will be deposited in adjacent farmland. The Columbia River Gorge will be impacted by coal dust. The coal dust will impact not only soil quality but will settle on trees and fruit affecting crop quality and yield.
It is my request that the committee contact the agriculture businesses listed below and ask them how the proposed coal terminal and its numerous coal trains will affect their quality of life, their crops and livelihood.

The Columbia River Gorge is a National Treasure whose boundaries need our respect and protection.
Thank you for your time and thank you (in advance) for visiting the Columbia River Gorge. Once you lay eyes upon her majestic vistas you will come to understand how preserving this National Treasure is in our state’s best interest.
