Dear Cowlitz County Commissioners, Wash. Dept. of Ecology, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
I am concerned about the Mercury content in the pollutants generated by coal fired power plants. No matter if coal is burned here in the US or in Asia, our health is at risk if coal is used as a fuel source.
If the coal industry is allowed to ship 44 tons of coal from the Millenium Bulk Terminals, we on the West Coast will be especially vulnerable to negative health issues including respiratory ailments and even Alzheimer’s.
Those who live near rail lines carrying coal trains will also be subjected to mercury poisoning from coal dust blowing from the open coal cars. That same mercury laden coal dust will fall into streams and rivers and agricultural irrigation ditches, and permeate aquifers all along the route from the coal fields to Longview. And then the coal port will be a dispensary of poisonous lead and mercury for whales and for salmon that migrate to spawn up the Columbia River.
Acidification of the ocean waters and those very same streams, lakes, and rivers will also greatly damage aquatic life, resources that Washingtonians and Oregonians value and WILL FIGHT FOR.
Please include pollution and its effects on our health and the health of our aquatic life in the scope of the EIS on MBTV.
Say NO to COAL EXPORTS!
