As a professional biologist and citizen, I strongly urge denying permits for proposed new coal processing terminal at Longview WA. I am knowledgeable about and gravely concerned about current and future damage due to climate change. It is vitally important to not allow further expansion of fossil fuel burning but rather it needs to be sharply curtailed, in this country and in Asia where they are planning to send the coal. Besides this paramount reason for my opposition, I also well recognize the cellular and physiological damage caused by particulates, heavy metals, and various volatile organic compounds from coal dust and representing air and water pollutants which will damage human health and the environment associated with the transport, processing and burning of the coal. The economic and environmental impacts need to be fully assessed for now and for years in the future; if you honestly do this, I believe you will conclude that these coal ports should not be built and I urge this path. The US needs to dramatically change its own activities and encourage the same for the people of China---leave fossil fuels in the ground as no longer tenable for human and planetary health---the science is clear.
