Please study the effects of coal train diesel emissions as well as coal dust blowing off of the rail cars and off of the terminal coal stock piles on air quality in the Longview-Kelso area air-shed. There is already a poor air quality problem at times during the year as a result of industrial activities and air stagnation during inversions and still air episodes. Wind borne coal dust will be a problem at other times. Cowlitz county has worked hard over the years to improve air quality with some success and still some ways to go. Coal related dust and diesel train emissions will only serve to exacerbate the poor air quality and potentially make it much worse. This is serious for all citizens and especially so for those whose lungs are already compromised such as those with asthma and emphysema.
