This terminal proposal should be rejected based on a holistic assessment of the detrimental effects of coal mining, transport and utilization as a fuel source, and not on the short-term creation of jobs that by virtue of their reliance on a natural resource extraction project will exist for a limited time only. This project allows a dangerous misperception of benefit without cost, as the buyers and users of coal will be continents away, while Washington residents gain employment further up the supply chain. However the effects of climate change that result from using coal as a fuel source are global in scope, and no matter where in the world fossil fuels continue to be used, the entire planet is subject to the ramifications. Furthermore, as our state economy recovers from recession, there should be an emphasis put on creating employment that is sustainable in every sense of the word: both in terms of the future prospects of the jobs and in relation to the environment. Looking at the Millennium Bulk Terminals proposal with this broader focus shows the fundamental incompatibility between the economic and environmental goals of the state and the existence of such a terminal. Thank you for your consideration of this comment.
