I am concerned for the ultimate effects of toxins contained in the coal dust blowing from trains and the terminal. A peer-reviewed West Virginia University study, published in the journal "Environmental Research" included 2 million birth records in mountain-top removal mining areas of Appalachia. The study states: "The overall rate of birth defects in mountaintop removal areas, as compared to non-mining areas, was 13 percent higher between 1996 and 1999, and 42 percent higher between 2000 and 2003. The much-higher birth defect rate in the later period suggests that the health effects of MTR-related water and air pollution may be cumulative."
I am concerned that this study reflects the dangers to which even our unborn children will be exposed. Please consider the study when defining the scope of the environmental review, including a Comprehensive Health Impact Assessment.
