I urge SEPA to pursue the widest possible study of the impact of the proposed coal terminal in Washington State. I am a resident of Tacoma and I live very near the BNSF railway that follows the coast. Therefore I am concerned about the impact of additional coal trains on transportation, air quality (diesel locomotives), and noise levels in our community and around the state. But my concerns are much broader than that. We must look at the long term impact of increasing coal shipments from the Northwest. The US uses less and less coal because of its impact on our air and land. Burning fossil fuels in one place affects the entire planet because of the impact of carbon dioxide levels on the climate, the warming of the earth and the consequent disruptions of weather, agriculture, and sea level. Increasing the use of coal in the world by building more facilities for its transportation and use contributes to these dangerous outcomes. These are my views based on my own observations. The Department of Ecology has the resources and expertise to examine these questions during its impact study for the terminal.
