Dear U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, WA Department of Ecology, and Cowlitz County Commission,
My husband and I are strongly opposed to the proposal to construct a coal export terminal at Longview, WA.
This proposal would negatively affect our small town of Bellingham, and others along the train lines by increasing congestion and noise with more coal train traffic. Because there are no overpasses, the train traffic has the potential to delay emergency responders attempting to reach those in need on the other side of the tracts. Since by age old agreements the BSNF would not be required to construct the necessary overpasses, it would be an added necessary tax burden on Bellingham residents.
The negative environmental impacts are numerous. It would damage aquatic ecosystems and fishing areas on the Columbia River. Increased tanker traffic has the potential for shipping accidents and spills. I worry that when the empty coal ships return from China they will dispose of their ballast ( contaminated Chinese water), introducing dozens of invasive species that could ruin the salmon fishing industry, an important Washington industry.
I urge you to consider these impacts in the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement.
