Comment The proposal to ship coal through the Columbia Gorge by train or by barge, and then transfer it to ship to send off to Asia and other places is unsafe and unsound. I am opposed to granting the permits without a thorough Environmental Impact Study. Right now, it can be shown that the coal sales and shipping will not benefit the people of the Northwest, and will cause harm. 1. increased coal dust generated from transportation and handling will affect vulnerable human populations with air pollution 2. Salmon and farming products will be adversely affected 3. Burning of the coal in other parts of the world will impact the US, especially the Pacific NW with air pollution 4. The tax payers of Washington and Oregon, as well as the general US taxpayers will have to pay for pollution clean-up in the advent of a spill in the Columbia River or on land when there is a derailing. 5. Any jobs generated from the transfer and shipping of coal will be minimal compared to the loss of employment caused by illness and pollution to crops and fish.
