Dear USACE, Washington Department of Ecology, and Cowlitz County, I strongly oppose the construction of a coal terminal in Longview, WA, to enable the transportation of coal on trains and ships throughout the Northwest, for export to China. Every scientific study I've read regarding climate change says that we're almost out of time for stopping runaway climate change. Extracting coal from Wyoming, and shipping it to China, will clearly exacerbate climate change. Maybe it will create a few jobs, for a few years, but then what? What good are a few temp jobs on a dying planet? And why would we want to do China any favors, anyway? If China hadn't stolen millions of US manufacturing jobs over the last 20 years, we wouldn't even be considering seriously degrading our quality of life for a few thousand jobs. In return for us handing our jobs over to the Chinese, they ship us cheap shoddy goods that can't compare to the goods we used to manufacture here. The argument that "China will get its coal from Canada if we don't give it to them" is like a pedophile saying "if I don't rape this child, someone else will". Give me a break. Just today, I read about Chinese children getting a "smog day" off from school because the pollution was too bad for them to go outside: http://world.time.com/2013/10/21/kids-get-smog-day-as-pollution-shuts-down-chinese-city/ It blows my mind that we're even considering destroying the Powder River Basin to extract coal to ship to China for them to send back to us as pollution. What are we thinking? I really don't know how anyone who thinks beyond next year could possibly think that this is a good idea. Perhaps it will create a few jobs, for a few years, but the long-term costs are terrible. The Powder River Basin will be destroyed. Business will be disrupted from Wyoming to the Pacific Coast. Heart attack victims will die because ambulances can't get through. We'll have more and more heart attack victims because coal pollution will be coming our way from China. And runaway climate change will be unstoppable. Please, please, please reject the Longview coal export terminal! Sincerely, Margaret Willson
