Dear U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, WA Department of Ecology, and Cowlitz County Commission,
I am writing to voice my vehement opposition to the construction of a coal export terminal at Longview, WA - or anywhere else in my state.
Coal is about the dirtiest of the fossil fuels and in our effort to deal with climate change, encouraging the use of coal anywhere in the world is counter-intuitive and counter-productive.
Furthermore, transporting coal through neighborhoods creates polluting coal dust, noise pollution, and congestion.
The coal dust escaping from the trains - and the diesel that powers the engines - would pollute air and water, with deleterious effects to human health, especially the elderly and the very young who would possibly have asthma and other health conditions requiring costly medical intervention.
Coal should stay in the earth where it belongs. The U.S. should not be in the business of aiding other countries to use this dirty energy.
I urge you to consider the effect of increased coal use on climate change in the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement.
Thank you for this opportunity to comment.
