Most of the dissention regarding coal trains has been focused on global pollution and the release of coal dust. Another problem also exists with the transit of trains through towns such as Kennewick. The traffic backed up by 16 additional 1.5 mile trains per day would create exhaust fumes, increase gas costs and impatient-driver accidents. In addition, there is an opportunity cost involved in the delays caused by the trains, affecting the local economies. The use of coal is on the decline in the U.S., so the terminals would benefit only China, coal companies, and a few temporary construction workers. The traffic tie-ups would be unreal. Please take all of these consequences into account in ypou decisions.
