As a Spokane resident, I oppose the construction of terminals at Longview due to the drastic increase in coal-train traffic through my city. I am about to become a father, and I am concerned about the coal dust polluting the air and water in Spokane. We already suffer from less than optimal air quality in Spokane, and this project will make it worse. Open coal cars have been proven to produce particulate pollution (dangerous to children), and recent investigations have shown that even the existing coal train traffic through Spokane has been polluting Latah (Hangman) Creek. The Spokane Riverkeepers filed suit in July against BNSF Railway in US District Court (see attachment) for violating the Clean Water Act over the coal pollution found in the Spokane River and its tributary Latah Creek. If coal trains become way more frequent due to construction of the terminal at Longview, I think we can assume that such pollution will increase dramatically. And as a citizen of the Earth, I oppose this project due to climate change. What burns in China rains down in Washington. And climate change is a global phenomenon.
