To the fine folks conducting this scoping process: The scientific community reached consensus years ago: humans are causing global warming. Climate scientists also agree that global warming will heat the planet to deadly levels within my kids' lifetimes UNLESS we stop treating the atmosphere as an open sewer for carbon. We must pull carbon OUT of the atmosphere. How? let's ask the world's top climate scientist, the recently-retired NASA climate expert Dr. James Hansen. He says we must: 1: STOP ALL NEW DIRTY ENERGY PROJECTS (yup, that's you, coal!) 2: Begin massive reforestation and soil sequestration 3. Reduce our carbon emissions by 6% every year, starting this year. So why on earth would you even consider the folly of speeding coal through the beautiful Pacific Northwest and, ultimately, into our collective atmosphere? That alone is more than enough to laugh this project right off the table. In your scoping process, please consider the impact on those of us in the Northwest--and on the entire planet--who wish for nothing more than for our children to have a chance at good lives in the future. What about the rallying cry of "Jobs, jobs, jobs"? Sure--in the newly expanding clean energy industry! It will take a lot of work to transition to a post-fossil fuel world. But (and isn't this, um, obvious?) anything beats extinction. Thank you.
