Sep 13, 2013

US Army Corps of Engineers, Cowlitz County, Washington Department of Ecology WA

Dear Washington Department of Ecology,

Please accept these scoping comments for the environmental impact statement for the Millennium Bulk Terminal (MBTL) proposal for Longview, WA.

I urge you to oppose the proposal to export coal from the Powder River Basin through the Gorge to Longview for export to Asia. It is an ill-conceived idea in every respect, from the damage it will do to Oregon and Washington's magnificent Columbia River Gorge, to the effects on human health of coal dust, etc, and the inexcusable act of contributing yet more greenhouse gases when we seeing already how dangerous that is.

The argument that someone else will export the coal is fallacious and dangerous reasoning. It's time to take a principled and pragmatic stand against the rhetoric that argues that coal burning is inevitable. If we were to factor in the real long- and short-term effects --- economic and environmental --- of burning fossil fuels, we would be focusing our attention instead on alternative energy sources rather than even considering compromising the health of our children and of our planet so that a few people can make a buck.
