To whom it may concern:
I am writing to express my dismay at the proposal to export coal from Longview. I am worried about the health impacts and the environmental impacts of such proposal.
First of all, there are health concerns: coal dust can cause serious long-term health problems -- lung and heart disease and cancer. These are are wide ranging health dangers of coal dust, including exposure to toxic metals like mercury and increased rates of asthma. The railroad company (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) estimates up to 500 pounds of coal can be lost in the form of dust from each rain car en route. That's a lot of dust!
Secondly, coal export terminals in other parts of the U.S. are notoriously dirty. Massive coal piles are regularly sprayed with water in an attempt to suppress the clouds of coal dust associated with outdoor coal storage. This leads to large quantities of filthy wastewater that, along with stormwater runoff from acres of coal piles, will eventually discharge into the Columbia. This is a major impact on the Columbia River!
Please reconsider this proposal. It is not a good idea.
Thank you for your consideration of my views.
