I am a small business owner who has lived in the Longview area since 1996. I love this area and I have enjoyed becoming part of the community over the past 17 years.
One of the area's unique and positive attributes is its port commerce and industrial base. We are fortunate to have these economic engines as they contribute to stabilizing our economic base, employ workers with family wage jobs, and provide additional support through corporate sponsored community programs.
I am providing comment on the scope of the EIS for Millennium Bulk Terminals. I am in favor of the EIS as it is currently stated. I believe that there is ample environmental regulation to ensure that Millennium remains a good corporate citizen, just like the other industrial and commercial industries in the area. In fact, the risk the Millennium terminal presents is less than other industrial sectors already in operation.
Cowlitz County is still experiencing unemployment in the double digits. Allowing Millennium to build its terminal and begin operations will add living wage jobs and increase the local tax base.
Not only will this project benefit the local economy, it will also enhance the economies in Montana where the coal will be transported from and the region as ships visiting to load coal for transport to Asia most likely have brought some other good through a local port.
I ask that you stop spending my tax dollars on scoping, studies and meetings and approve the EIS so that Millennium can begin it's operations.
